Prior to 2009
I retired from a full-time teaching in 2005 and embarked on a new career as an artist. My teaching career spanned three decades and I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the experience of working in four different counties (Suffolk, Kent, Derbyshire and North Yorkshire). My final twenty years were as the Headteacher of a large Primary School & I have had the valuable experience over my career of working with children aged 4½ to 16 years.
I began drawing and painting as a very young child and this has continued throughout my life. In 1965, at the age of 15, I won an award in the ‘Castrol National Art Competition’. It was also the same year that I sold my first painting. My GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels included both Art and the History of Art. I attended evening 'Life Drawing' classes at Ipswich Art School. Choosing my career after sixth form proved extremely difficult. At that stage I was representing my County in two sports and my career teachers persuasively recommended a sporting direction instead of registering for an art foundation course and a career as an artist. I have mixed feelings about that guidance now. I gained my B.Ed (Hons) at Loughborough College and my MA at Teesside University.
Art and pottery have been essential elements throughout my life and a strong feature of my teaching and extra-curricular activities. For community & school events I designed and produced posters, programmes, tickets, certificates and painted scenery for stage productions. I have also completed two sign writing commissions for shop fronts, along with associated business cards, one in Derbyshire and one in Yorkshire.
I set up and ran a small studio pottery for many years in Furness Vale Derbyshire and I have taught pottery to primary school children for over twenty years.
